Accelerated Reader (AR)

What is AR and how does it work?In first grade, students are introduced to Accelerated Reader. Accelerated Reader is an individualized computer reading activity intended to increase a child's reading level while at the same time building a love for reading. It also holds children accountable for the reading they are doing. This page is intended to give parents a quick overview in order to better help their children at home. Each student is given the STAR computerized reading test to determine their reading level/range. They have their range written on a card at school. After the reading level is determined, the student may check out books from the school or classroom library and take them home to read. It is suggested that the child read the book two or three times to an adult before taking an AR test. To help prepare for the test, the student could be asked questions regarding the story's details. After this is done, and the student feels he or she is ready, they will take an AR test on the computer in our classroom. When students pass an AR test, he or she will receive points based on the reading level of their book. Each student will meet with their teacher to set a point goal to obtain each nine weeks. A typical first grade level book is only worth 1/2 point, however, the more difficult the book, the more points it is worth.
Students should remember to bring their AR books to school each day as we encourage them to read them during the day as well. AR is not counted towards the student's reading grade in any way, but that does not diminish the importance of the program.
